Lord Jamar’s return to DJ Vlad’s platform has reignited old controversies and left many questions.

Lord Jamar and Vlad. These are two names forever linked in Hip-Hop’s complex media ecosystem. Well, they are back.

The Brand Nubian rapper was given super props for leaving DJ Vlad’s popular YouTube platform—but he’s returned. This reunion isn’t being welcomed with open arms by a lot of people. Instead, it’s triggering waves of criticism from viewers who remember why he left in the first place. OK, let’s try to walk this down.

For context, Lord Jamar was among the first and most consistent voices on VladTV, anchoring cultural debates. Alongside comedian Godfrey, the two eventually distanced themselves from the platform. The main thing was Vlad’s refusal to apologize to Minister Louis Farrakhan as the final straw.

I believe Vlad paraphrased remarks by Minister Farrakhan that were deemed misleading and offensive by some in the Black community. Artists, activists and regular people were upset, but he didn’t apologize. The backlash was swift. Lord Jamar and Godfrey severed ties with VladTV. A boycott followed.

But now, five years later, Lord Jamar is back on VladTV, citing the boycott flopped. And that he did say “sorry” earlier this year.

Social media users have lit up comment sections with criticism, accusing Lord Jamar of abandoning principles for a check. Many say his reappearance validates a platform they feel has long disrespected Black voices while profiting from Black pain.

In response to the online dragging, Lord Jamar has spoken up—though not exactly with an apology or a defense that many find convincing. Instead, he emphasized that the call to boycott VladTV wasn’t solely about Farrakhan.

This whole “boycott” of Vlad was never only rooted in the lack of apology to Minister Farrakhan. There was much more to it than that. Also, it was never a true boycott. If it’s about the bag, just say that. I can feel that.

Lord Jamar and Godfrey had previously established their own platforms and pushed forward with independent media projects—without Vlad. They did their thing and so did Vlad. Godfrey is viral nearly every day.

VladTV remains a juggernaut in the rap interview world. Yes, you can catch a fed case, but at the same time, he’s still doing his thing.

Lord Jamar’s return speaks volumes about the harsh realities of media relevancy in 2025. He wants to get his message out, he says. Still, for many, it feels like betrayal. For others, it’s just business. Check out what he has to say below. Vlad got it locked.
