Kodak Black was honored with the key to Pompano Beach for his local philanthropy, despite a long legal history.

Kodak Black received the key to Pompano Beach on Tuesday (July 8) during a city ceremony that recognized his charitable work and hometown roots, despite a turbulent legal past.

Mayor Rex Hardin presented the honor to the “Super Gremlin” rapper, in front of a cheering crowd, acknowledging his ongoing efforts to support local families.

“Your actions speak volumes about the kind of man you have become,” Hardin said. “You have shown us that giving back isn’t about fanfare, it’s about your heart. You have used your platform to not just rise, but to lift others along the way.”

The applause grew louder as the mayor listed the rapper’s community contributions, which include donating air conditioners to public housing residents during Florida’s brutal summers, handing out turkeys during the holidays, and gifting bikes and toys to kids at Christmas. He’s also helped 200 families in Pompano Beach cover their rent — twice.

The city’s recognition comes as Kodak Black continues to navigate a complicated public image.

Since 2015, he’s faced multiple arrests tied to robbery, drug possession, weapons charges and fleeing law enforcement. In 2019, he was sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for lying on background check forms to buy firearms.

That sentence was cut short by President Donald Trump, who commuted it on January 20, 2021, during his final hours in office. The White House cited Kodak’s charitable work as a key reason for the clemency, noting his support for “a variety of charitable efforts, such as providing educational resources to students and families of fallen law enforcement officers and the underprivileged.”

He’s also covered school supply costs for students, funded daycare centers, and regularly donates food and gifts during the holiday season.
