Justice from Memphis rapper Young Dolph will be delayed, thanks to the latest court ruling in the ongoing quest for justice.

Hernandez Govan will now face trial on August 18, 2025, in Memphis after a judge delayed proceedings in the case accusing him of orchestrating the murder of Young Dolph, the acclaimed rapper gunned down in 2021.

The trial was originally set for July 28, 2025, but that date has been reassigned as a report hearing. Court officials have not publicly explained the reason for the postponement.

Govan, who is charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, is accused of organizing the fatal ambush that ended Young Dolph’s life outside Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies on November 17, 2021.

He rejected a plea deal on December 13, 2024, opting instead to take his chances at trial.

Prosecutors allege Govan played a central role in coordinating the hit, which has already led to convictions for others involved in the case.

Justin Johnson, also known as “Straight Drop,” was found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy and illegal firearm possession. He received a life sentence plus 50 years and served concurrently.

Another suspect, Cornelius Smith, pleaded guilty and testified against Johnson. Smith told the court Yo Gotti’s late brother, “Big Jook,” allegedly ordered the $100,000 hit on Young Dolph.

Smith said he and Johnson were promised $40,000 each for the killing but only received $800. He also claimed that Yo Gotti’s label, CMG, covered his legal fees.

Smith is still in custody awaiting sentencing and is expected to testify against Govan.

Big Jook was gunned down on January 14, 2024, as he left a restaurant after attending a repass for a late family member.

Jermarcus Johnson, another relative of Justin Johnson, received probation after helping the suspects communicate while they were on the run.

As of June 30, 2025, Govan remains the only defendant awaiting trial in the high-profile case. The next court hearing is scheduled for July 28, 2025.
