Megan Thee Stallion broke down in tears while speaking about grief and depression during the “i AM The Table” Benefit Brunch hosted by Taraji P. Henson on Sunday (October 12) at National Harbor, Maryland, revealing she was frightened by the depth of her own sadness and turned to therapy to survive.

The Grammy-winning rapper and philanthropist opened up during an emotional conversation with Henson at the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation’s inaugural brunch, which capped off the 5th Annual “Can We Talk?” Multicultural Arts & Wellness Summit.

The event coincided with World Mental Health Day and aimed to raise awareness and support for mental wellness in underserved communities.

“Through all of that grief, I was just working and trying to be the best Megan I could be,” Megan said, her voice cracking as she paused to collect herself. “And I didn’t know I needed therapy until one day, I was just like, Damn, I’m really sad, and it’s really scary how sad I am.”

The rapper revealed the pain that pushed her to seek help. “And it was, it was like, I didn’t care what happened to me,” she continued. “And I didn’t want to feel like that, like I should care about my life.”

Megan’s emotional admission came as she reflected on the years following the death of her mother and manager, Holly Thomas, who died in 2019 from a brain tumor.

That loss left Megan reeling, both personally and professionally, a struggle she later explored in her 2024 Prime Video documentary, Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words.

After her mother’s passing, Megan battled depression, suicidal thoughts and a collapse in self-worth.

The trauma was compounded by the 2020 shooting involving Tory Lanez, which further strained her mental health and led her to prioritize therapy as a form of recovery.
