Jeezy requested primary custody of his daughter in his divorce from Jeannie Mai on Wednesday (April 10). According to Page Six and TMZ, Jeezy claimed Mai refused to honor their current custody agreement by preventing him from parenting time for the past two months.
The 46-year-old rapper previously accused Mai of “gatekeeping” their child. She denied the allegations, insisting she was only concerned about their daughter’s safety.
“It is essential to clarify that [her] insistence on reasonable safety measures being put in place, such as safely securing and locking away all firearms that have been unsecured in the past, as well as having familiarity and properly trained caregivers is absolutely not gatekeeping, but rather a responsible effort to prioritize their daughter’s well-being,” Mai’s lawyers contended.
Jeezy pushed for primary custody of his child by citing Mai’s lifestyle. Jeezy argued that Mai’s brother and mother do most of the childcare due to Mai’s travel schedule. He believed his daughter should live with him because she needed more stability.
Last year, Jeezy filed for divorce. Mai claimed she learned the news “at the same time as the rest of the world.” Jeezy released a statement about their split in October 2023.
“The decision to end this chapter in my life was not made impulsively and comes with a heavy heart,” he said. “Despite this, my love and respect for Jeannie remains and the time we spent together holds a cherished place in my heart.”
Jeezy and Mai attended couples therapy, but they were unable to save their marriage. He discussed his divorce in a November 2023 conversation with Nia Long.
“I can tell you that I’m disappointed,” he said. “I can tell you that I’m uneasy. But God has put me on a different path, and that path is going to entail for me to take care of myself and to love myself and to be in the best situation that I can thrive as someone who’s been through all of the things that I’ve been through.”
Jeezy married Mai in 2021. The former couple’s daughter was born in 2022.
